Sifiso Sithole has received the first red card of the 2026 FIFA World Cup after being sent off during South Africa’s opening match against host nation Mexico at the iconic Estadio Azteca.
It was undoubtedly a night to forget for the CD Tondela midfielder. Earlier in the match, it was his critical mistake just outside the penalty box that gifted Mexico their opening goal in the 8th minute.
Things went from bad to worse in the third minute of the second half. As Mexico’s Bryan Gutierrez broke through on a clear goalscoring opportunity, Sithole lunged in with a tactical foul just outside the penalty area. The referee wasted no time in showing a straight red card to the Bafana Bafana player.
This marks only the fifth time in football history that a player has been sent off during a World Cup opening match.
Furthermore, this is the first red card witnessed in a World Cup opener since Bolivia’s Marco Etcheverry was sent off against Germany back in June 1994.
We leave you with the footage of the incident…
