Early Red Card Shatters Iraq’s World Cup Hopes Against Senegal

Having previously lost 4-1 to Norway and 3-0 to France, the Lions of Mesopotamia still harbored slim mathematical hopes of qualifying for the Round of 32 if they managed a high-scoring win against Senegal.

However, the exact opposite unfolded. Habib Diarra opened the scoring for Senegal in just the 4th minute. The match turned entirely on its head in the 13th minute when Iraqi defender Rebin Sulaka was sent off, allowing the Lions of Teranga to take complete control.

Ismaïla Sarr and Iliman Ndiaye each netted a goal, while Pape Gueye bagged a brace to complete the 5-0 rout. Interestingly, Senegal entered the match having also lost their first two games against Norway and France.

Iraq’s Winless World Cup Record Continues

Following this exit, Iraq remains without a single victory in its World Cup history. During their debut appearance in 1986, they also suffered three consecutive defeats. In this 2026 edition, their lone goal was scored by Aymen Hussein against Norway.

With this commanding victory, Senegal has guaranteed its place in the Round of 32 as one of the best third-placed teams, regardless of other group results. They are highly anticipated to face England in the next round, provided the Three Lions secure the top spot in their group.
