Disastrous World Cup Campaign Seals Donis’s Fate

The Green Falcons crashed out of the tournament in the group stage after securing just two points from draws against Uruguay and Cape Verde, alongside a heavy defeat to Spain. Throughout the group stage, Saudi Arabia scored only one goal while conceding five.

According to prominent Saudi newspaper Arriyadiyah, there is widespread dissatisfaction with the Greek tactician’s performance. Doubts have intensified over whether he is the right man to lead the national team during a critical upcoming period for Saudi sports.

Saudi Arabia is preparing to compete in the Gulf Cup this coming December, followed by hosting the 2027 AFC Asian Cup, with the federation setting an absolute target to win both titles.

Jorge Jesus and Zlatko Dalic Highlight Saudi Shortlist

Should Donis be officially dismissed, Portuguese manager Jorge Jesus is widely considered the favorite to take over. Jesus boasts immense experience in the Saudi Pro League (Roshn League), having historically won the league title with two different domestic giants, Al-Hilal and Al-Nassr.

At the same time, current Croatia manager Zlatko Dalić has emerged as a strong candidate on SAFF’s shortlist. However, Saudi Arabia faces stiff competition from the United Arab Emirates, who are also reportedly keen on securing the services of the 2018 World Cup runner-up.

Context: Georgios Donis was appointed as Saudi Arabia’s manager less than two months before the World Cup kicked off, succeeding Hervé Renard. Despite the current sacking rumors, his contract in Riyadh still has one year remaining.
