The dismissals began in the 49th minute when South African defender Sifiso Sithole was sent off, marking the first red card in a World Cup opener since 1994, and only the fifth in tournament history.

Things went from bad to worse for Bafana Bafana when substitute Themba Zwane received a straight red card for a violent hand-to-face challenge on a Mexican defender. Finally, Mexico’s star Cesar Montes was also sent off in the 92nd minute, capping off a chaotic match.

With three dismissals, this clash officially becomes the most red-carded opening match in World Cup history.

Furthermore, South Africa has become only the second nation in history to have two players sent off in a World Cup opening game. Remarkably, Bafana Bafana had only received two red cards in their entire World Cup history prior to the 2026 edition.

The only other team to suffer two red cards in an opening match was Cameroon back in 1990 against Argentina; however, the Indomitable Lions famously managed to secure a historic 1-0 victory.

In contrast, 36 years later, South Africa fell to a 2-0 defeat in 2026, losing not just the match, but also two of their key players for the remaining group stage fixtures.
