L’Équipe has revealed that Kylian Mbappé has not fully recovered from his recent knee injury, and that Real Madrid may have to give him painkillers to enable him to play against Barcelona in the 2026 Spanish Super Cup final on Sunday.
Since announcing his injury at the beginning of the year, Mbappé was expected to need three weeks to fully recover from the knee sprain and return to playing matches. However, he returned to training after only 10 days, raising many questions and concerns about the possibility of aggravating the injury.
According to the latest report, the immense pressure on Real Madrid and coach Xabi Alonso has forced Mbappé to push himself a little to return early and help his team in the Spanish Super Cup. The player himself is also highly motivated to win his first title of the season, especially against their arch-rivals.
Mbappé does not intend to risk playing against Barcelona if he feels unable to do so, but he is prepared, if necessary, to take painkillers and play in El Clásico, with the understanding that he will then be rested against Albacete in the Copa del Rey and Levante in La Liga.
Xabi Alonso announced in a press conference on Saturday that Mbappé’s participation in the Barcelona match will depend on how the player feels in the final training sessions in Jeddah before El Clásico.
The 25-year-old arrived in Jeddah on Friday and posted a tweet on his X account saying, “Peace be upon you, Jeddah.”
It is worth noting that Mbappé has played 24 matches for Real Madrid this season in all competitions, scoring 29 goals and providing 5 assists. He finished last year equaling Cristiano Ronaldo’s record for most goals scored in a calendar year for Real Madrid, with 59 goals.
