Paris Saint-Germain made Champions League history against Villarreal with an extraordinary attacking start that shattered a longstanding record.
Visiting the Spanish side at La Cerámica on Matchday 4 of the league phase, PSG capitalised on the hosts’ disarray to race into a 4–0 lead.
According to Opta, Paris needed just 16 minutes and two seconds to score their four goals — the fastest any team has reached that total from kick-off in the competition’s history.
João Neves opened the scoring in the ninth minute, meeting a corner with a right-footed finish. In the 12th minute, PSG punished a mistake as Villarreal tried to play out from the back: Senny Mayulu passed to Maghnes Akliouche, who laid the ball back for Désiré Doué to score the second.
Villarreal barely had time to regroup before Mayulu added a third in the 13th minute, firing home left-footed after a Neves effort rebounded into his path. Fabián Ruiz then completed the four-goal burst with a powerful left-footed strike at 16:02, officially recorded as a 17th-minute goal.
The previous record belonged to Real Madrid, who went four goals ahead against Dinamo Zagreb on 22 November 2011. Karim Benzema, José Callejón and Gonzalo Higuaín scored the first three before Mesut Özil added the fourth in the 20th minute of a match Madrid went on to win 6–2.
Atlético Madrid had come close to that mark against Tottenham in March 2026, scoring their fourth goal in the 22nd minute. That had placed them second behind their city rivals, before PSG’s lightning start reshaped the standings.
The Parisian scoring spree continued their impressive start to this season’s competition. Luis Enrique’s side arrived at Villarreal with three wins from three matches, most recently beating Barcelona 4–2, and delivered another emphatic statement on the European stage.
