Pep Guardiola has officially rejected an offer from the Italian Football Federation (FIGC) to take charge of the Italy national team.
FIGC Technical Director Paolo Maldini and his advisor Leonardo recently met with Guardiola in Barcelona to present their ambitious new project.
According to transfer insider Fabrizio Romano, Guardiola evaluated the proposal over the past week before deciding against an immediate return to coaching. The former Manchester City manager prefers to spend time with his family and recharge his energy before embarking on a new managerial challenge.
Italian outlet La Gazzetta dello Sport confirmed that the Spanish tactician formally communicated his decision to the FIGC in recent hours, expressing his gratitude and pride for Italy’s interest while emphasizing that he is not currently ready to take on the role.
The Italian Federation was reportedly prepared to break its wage structure to convince Guardiola, even considering financial backing from Serie A clubs to cover his salary. However, Guardiola’s desire for a temporary break from football proved decisive.
Italy Explores Alternative Targets After Double Blow
Guardiola’s rejection comes shortly after Carlo Ancelotti also turned down the job to remain with the Brazil national team.
Following Guardiola’s refusal, Andrea Pirlo has emerged as the frontrunner for the Azzurri hot seat, with Roberto Mancini and Antonio Conte remaining alternative options on the federation’s shortlist.
The FIGC has been searching for a new head coach since Gennaro Gattuso resigned after Italy failed to qualify for the 2026 FIFA World Cup—marking their third consecutive World Cup absence. Italy’s next official test comes in September when they face Belgium in the UEFA Nations League.
