Al-Ahly has completed the signing of Danish coach Jess Thorup , who will take over the club’s technical leadership on a permanent basis, succeeding the sacked Spanish coach José Rivero.
Al-Ahly has been searching for a new coach for over a month, and the venerable Egyptian club was linked with several prominent coaches, such as Bruno Lage and Rui Vitoria, before finally settling on Thorup.
According to Al-Ahly’s official statement, Thorup, 55, signed a two-and-a-half-year contract to coach the Red Castle. He will be accompanied by five assistants in his new role.
Thorup is one of the most prominent Danish coaches in recent years, having won the Danish League twice, once with FC Midtjylland and once with FC Copenhagen. He has also previously worked in the Belgian League and the German Bundesliga.
Thorup’s last coaching experience was with Augsburg in the Bundesliga, where he finished 11th and 12th in the league over the last two seasons, before being dismissed at the end of last season.
Thorup is currently coaching Al Ahly, who are tied at the top of the Egyptian Premier League with Zamalek and Al Masry, just days before the Cairo giants begin their CAF Champions League campaign.
