Como claimed a historic 9–1 victory over Lens in France, continuing their remarkable Champions League campaign under Cesc Fàbregas.
The win at Stade Bollaert-Delelis came on Matchday 4 of the league phase, with the Italian club’s first appearance in the competition rapidly developing into a challenge for the leading positions.
Tasos Douvikas led the scoring with a hat-trick in the seventh, 32nd and 57th minutes. Nico Paz, Lucas Da Cunha, Marc-Oliver Kempf, Mattia Liberali, Martin Baturina and Matteo Papaccioli added the other goals, while Ruben Aguilar scored Lens’ only goal in the 65th minute.
The eight-goal margin equalled the biggest victory in the competition’s modern Champions League era, dating back to 1992. Liverpool beat Beşiktaş 8–0 in 2007, while Real Madrid defeated Malmö by the same scoreline in 2015.
Como also matched Bayern Munich’s record for the most goals scored by a team in a single Champions League match, following the German side’s 9–2 victory over Dinamo Zagreb in 2024. They also surpassed the previous record away winning margin of seven goals, jointly held by Marseille, Shakhtar Donetsk and Liverpool.
The victory lifted Como to fourth place with nine points from three wins and one defeat, having scored 19 goals and conceded six. They previously beat Leipzig and Manchester United by identical 4–1 scorelines, with their only defeat coming against Feyenoord, 3–2.
The results bear the stamp of Fàbregas, who joined Como as a player in 2022, retired in 2023 and moved into coaching within the club before taking full charge of the first team in 2024. The Spaniard guided them to fourth place in Serie A last season, securing their first Champions League qualification.
Como’s impressive form extends beyond Europe. They also sit fourth in Serie A this season with 23 points from 10 matches, following seven wins, two draws and one defeat. They have scored 18 goals and conceded eight.
Fàbregas’ side arrived at Lens on the back of four consecutive domestic victories over Fiorentina, Sassuolo, Torino and Venezia, before adding this extraordinary European result. They next host AEK Athens on 24 November on Matchday 5, looking to maintain their push for direct qualification to the round of 16.
