Mourinho after returning to Benfica: Coaching Fenerbahçe was a huge mistake

Jose Mourinho expressed his overwhelming happiness at coaching Benfica, noting that he had returned to where he belonged: coaching elite clubs in the world, after his recent experience with Fenerbahçe.

Mourinho was dismissed from coaching Fenerbahçe after a year with the Turkish club, during which he failed to win any official titles. He was then dismissed after losing the Champions League play-off to Benfica.

Mourinho told A Bola newspaper after his second appointment at Benfica, “My career has been rich. I have coached many of the biggest clubs in the world in different countries, but I made some wrong decisions.”

He added, “I made a mistake coaching Fenerbahçe. It was not suitable for my cultural or football level. It was never the level I was used to working at.”

Regarding his coaching of Benfica, he said, “I can say that I’ve returned to where I belong, to coach one of the biggest clubs in the world.”

He continued, “Today I feel more hungry for success than I did 25 years ago, and I promise that I will live for Benfica and for my mission.”

He concluded, “I have never felt as honored or motivated as I do now as coach of Benfica at any of the other giant clubs I’ve coached.”

Mourinho signed a two-year contract with Benfica, with the option to terminate the contract at the end of the current season at the option of both parties.
