Although he stated that his resignation was due to personal reasons, The New York Times suggests that the team’s lackluster start to the current season may be a major factor in the Argentine’s departure from MetLife Stadium after nearly a year in charge.

Mascherano Leaves Inter Miami Abruptly

Speaking to Inter Miami’s official website upon announcing his decision, Mascherano said, “I want to let everyone know that, for personal reasons, I have decided to end my journey as coach of Inter Miami.”

He added, “I want to thank the club’s management for the trust they placed in me, I want to thank every employee at this institution for their fantastic teamwork, but especially the players who helped us experience unforgettable moments.”

Meanwhile, Inter Miami owner Jorge Mas commented on the decision, saying, “Javier will always be a part of this club’s history. We respect his decision and are incredibly grateful for everything he has given us, both in terms of titles and the daily commitment he showed in leading the team.”

As yet, American media outlets have not revealed who will replace the Argentine coach, though it is likely to be an Argentine or Spanish coach given the large number of Latin American players on the team.

In his first season as head coach, Mascherano led Inter Miami to one of the most successful seasons in the club’s history, winning two titles.

Mascherano led Inter Miami to their first-ever MLS Cup title, along with the Eastern Conference championship.

Under his leadership, the team had a record-breaking 2025 season, scoring a total of 101 goals across the regular season and playoffs – the most goals scored in a single MLS season.

Inter Miami made history at the 2025 FIFA Club World Cup, becoming the first MLS team to reach the knockout stages of the tournament.

Inter Miami also became the first CONCACAF team to defeat a European opponent in an official international match and the first U.S. team to achieve a victory in the tournament’s history.

Regionally, Inter Miami reached the CONCACAF Champions Cup semifinals and qualified for the CONCACAF Cup of Leagues final for the second time in only their third appearance in the competition.
