Journalist Fabrizio Romano revealed that Manchester United entered into negotiations with Aston Villa goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez to sign him in the final hours of the summer transfer window.
United is looking for a new goalkeeper, and initially planned to sign Antwerp goalkeeper Seyni Lammens, but an agreement has not yet been reached.
According to Romano, United have recently opened negotiations with Emiliano Martinez as a backup plan in case the signing of Lammens fails, and he is the most likely candidate at the moment.
This is not the first time United have negotiated with Martinez. An agreement was previously in the works between the two parties at the beginning of the summer, but Aston Villa blocked the deal after demanding a large sum to sell him and rejecting the idea of a loan.
The world’s best goalkeeper over the past three years wants to leave Aston Villa, so negotiations with United aren’t expected to be difficult. However, the crisis lies in his club’s need to sell him to balance the financial accounts, while the Reds still only want a loan option.
In any case, United’s current concern is securing a new goalkeeper. It’s clear that Altay Bayındır isn’t capable of becoming a regular starter, while André Onana may leave or remain on the bench.
