El Mundo reports that Xabi Alonso’s dismissal as Real Madrid coach is closer than ever, following the club’s 2-0 defeat to Celta Vigo in La Liga on Sunday.
According to all Spanish media outlets, Alonso has already lost the support of the Real Madrid dressing room, and his relationship with most of his players is at its worst, which is reflected in the Merengues’ recent lackluster performances.
Real Madrid officials met at the club until the early hours of Monday morning to discuss the team’s situation and concluded that sacking Alonso could salvage Los Blancos’ season, especially given the players’ growing discontent with him.
However, Florentino Pérez has decided to give Alonso one last chance to redeem himself in Wednesday’s Champions League match against Manchester City.
Should Real Madrid suffer another defeat, the most likely option will be to sack Alonso immediately, a stark contrast to the club’s plan two weeks ago at the start of their current slump.
Real Madrid’s management has already begun searching for Alonso’s replacement, with Jürgen Klopp and Zinedine Zidane being prominent names, although securing either will be a very complicated task.
Klopp is not interested in returning to coaching, while Zidane is waiting to take over the French national team after the 2026 World Cup.
It is said that Real Madrid is prepared to grant Zidane a historic exception, allowing him to coach the French national team concurrently with managing the Royal Club, while also granting him full authority at the Santiago Bernabéu.
