Liverpool goalkeeper Giorgi Mamardashvili saved a penalty from Manchester City star Erling Haaland, achieving a remarkable milestone.
The referee awarded City a penalty in the 12th minute, which Haaland took, but Mamardashvili dived to his left and made a brilliant save.
Since the start of the 2023-2024 season, no goalkeeper in Europe’s top five leagues has saved more penalties than the 24-year-old Liverpool goalkeeper.
The Georgian goalkeeper has saved six penalties this season, five with Valencia and one with Liverpool.
In total, the Liverpool goalkeeper has saved nine penalties in his career, including two in the Georgian league with Lokomotiv Tbilisi and eight with Valencia.
Mamardashvili conceded 25 goals from penalties, 13 of which came in Europe’s top five leagues: one with Liverpool in the Premier League and 12 with Valencia in La Liga.
Despite Mamardashvili’s efforts, Haaland scored a goal shortly after, a superb header from a Mateus Núñez cross in the 29th minute.
