Alexander Isak was unable to participate in Liverpool’s final training session ahead of Tuesday’s Champions League clash against Real Madrid at Anfield.
The Swedish striker has missed Liverpool’s last three matches due to an ankle injury, and it now seems unlikely he will even be available for selection against Real Madrid.
Isak is still experiencing significant pain, and Arne Slott is unwilling to risk him by bringing him back to training and matches too soon, fearing aggravation of the injury and a longer absence for the Reds.
With Isak unavailable, Slott is expected to revert to Hugo Ekiteke as the lone striker, with Mohamed Salah and Cody Gakpo continuing behind him, following the trio’s acceptable performance against Aston Villa.
Meanwhile, Curtis Jones has returned to Liverpool training after missing the Aston Villa match due to an injury from which he has now fully recovered, making him available for selection against Real Madrid.
It should be noted that Liverpool will also be without Jeremy Frimpong against Real Madrid due to injury.
Liverpool have 6 points from their first 3 Champions League matches after wins against Eintracht Frankfurt and Atlético Madrid and a defeat to Galatasaray, while Real Madrid have 9 points thanks to victories over Marseille, Kairat, and Juventus.
