Real Madrid manager José Mourinho has mounted a firm defense of Vinícius Júnior in the face of ongoing criticism, insisting that goals will soon return as the Brazilian fully adapts to new tactical demands.
Mourinho’s comments came after Real Madrid’s 4-1 victory over Rayo Vallecano on Matchday 5 of La Liga, a fixture in which Vinícius assisted Jude Bellingham’s goal while teenager Yan Diomande earned his first start for the club.
Mourinho Backs Vinícius Amid Bernabéu Criticism
“Vinícius is physically better than ever; he is very close to reaching top speed and possesses an incredible capacity for repeated high-intensity efforts,” the Portuguese manager stated.
“He is mentally strong, knows Real Madrid inside out, and carries immense responsibility for both club and country. Right now, we are in a phase focused on assists and defensive understanding, and the goals will naturally follow,” Mourinho added.
Vinícius has featured in five matches for Real Madrid across all competitions this season, registering one goal and two assists over 441 minutes, with his pass against Rayo marking his second league assist of the campaign.
The scrutiny stems from a decline in form originating last season, alongside missed chances, frequent possession losses, over-reliance on individual plays, and demands for greater defensive contribution. Whistles from the Bernabéu crowd persisted despite Vinícius recovering nine balls against Inter Milan—his highest single-match total since 2020.
Mourinho’s Plan for Yan Diomande’s Development
Addressing Diomande’s progress, Mourinho said: “He is improving and has plenty to learn tactically, but he possesses incredible talent and great strength, giving us numerous positional options.”
The manager explained that the Ivorian winger can operate on the left in Vinícius’ position or switch to the right flank, emphasizing his intent to develop the player gradually following just one full season at the elite European level.
Diomande has made six appearances in a Real Madrid shirt to date, including one start, totaling 166 minutes without a goal or assist. He completed 72 minutes against Rayo as part of Mourinho’s phased integration plan.
