Manchester City star Jeremy Doku has come under intense fire after revealing his intention to temporarily leave Belgium’s 2026 FIFA World Cup squad to be present for the birth of his first child this week.
Doku featured in Belgium’s opening World Cup match, which ended in a 1-1 draw. However, the winger could now sit out some of the Red Devils’ crucial group stage fixtures to remain by his partner’s side during the birth this month.
The player’s decision sparked considerable controversy following sharp remarks from L’Equipe journalist and presenter France Pierron. She heavily criticized Doku on air, questioning his commitment to representing his country at football’s most prestigious tournament.
Speaking on the L’Equipe channel, Pierron said: “You can’t miss a World Cup… And now, you’re not going to the match just to cut an umbilical cord?”
She further added: “You have the chance to participate in a World Cup, and there are hundreds of footballers who would kill to be in your place. But you’re going to leave all that to witness the birth of your child—which is a disgusting moment, excuse me, where the father is useless and his role is merely that of an extra.”
Team Status Update: As of now, the Belgian Football Association has not issued an official statement regarding Doku’s availability for tomorrow’s match against Iran. This comes at a tricky time, as the Manchester City forward had previously expressed his strong ambitions to become a pivotal, key player for his nation in this tournament.
