Mohamed Hany suffered an unfortunate stroke of bad luck as he scored an own goal during Egypt’s clash against Belgium at the FIFA World Cup 2026.
The Al Ahly right-back had put on a stellar performance throughout the match. In fact, his defensive masterclass forced Belgium’s manager, Rudi Garcia, to switch Jérémy Doku’s position after the winger completely failed to breach Egypt’s right flank during the first half.
However, Hany’s luck ran out shortly after Romelu Lukaku was subbed on. A quick buildup on Belgium’s right led to a low cross flashing into the penalty box. The ball missed the Napoli striker but took a cruel deflection off Hany’s foot, nesting into the back of Mostafa Shobeir’s net.
An Uncanny Historical Coincidence
This marks only the second time Egypt has conceded an own goal in FIFA World Cup history. The first occurred during the 2018 World Cup in Russia, when Ahmed Fathi accidentally scored in his own net against the hosts.
The bizarre coincidence lies in the fact that both players were occupying the exact same position on the pitch—right-back—when misfortune struck.
