Ghana sacks coach 72 days before 2026 World Cup!

The Ghana Football Association announced the dismissal of head coach Otto Addo, just 72 days before the start of the World Cup finals scheduled for next summer.

Addo’s departure comes after a string of disappointing results, most recently a 2-1 friendly defeat to Germany in Stuttgart on Monday, and a heavy 5-1 loss to Austria in Vienna last Friday.

The Ghanaian national team has been experiencing a clear crisis in recent years, highlighted by their failure to qualify for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations.

This crisis has been exacerbated by the Black Stars’ four consecutive defeats, despite boasting a squad of stars such as Manchester City’s Antoine Simeone and Tottenham’s Mohammed Kudus.

In an official statement released after the Germany match, the Ghana Football Association confirmed that it had parted ways with Adew, stating that his departure was effective immediately. The statement added, “The Ghana Football Association will announce the new technical direction for the Black Stars in due course.”

Addo had taken over as Ghana’s coach in March 2024 after a successful career with Borussia Dortmund’s youth teams.

Ghana is set to begin its 2026 World Cup campaign against Panama on June 18, followed by a match against England on June 23, and will conclude the group stage against Croatia on June 27.
