Flamengo secured their place in the 2025 Intercontinental Cup semi-finals after defeating Mexico’s Cruz Azul 2-1 in what became known as the “Derby of the Americas.”
The new format of the continental tournament, introduced last year, pits the champions of South America and North America against each other in a match dubbed the “Derby of the Americas,” with the winner advancing to the semi-finals, also known as the Challenge Cup.
Pyramids had previously defeated Auckland City 3-0 in the first round, then pulled off a major upset by eliminating Asian champions Al-Ahli Saudi in Jeddah with another 3-0 victory.
Flamengo’s win over Cruz Azul in the match held in Qatar will see the Brazilian club face Pyramids in the semi-finals.
The match will take place on December 13 at the Ahmed Bin Ali Stadium, and the winner will face Paris Saint-Germain on December 17.
It is worth noting that Real Madrid are the current holders of the Intercontinental Cup title, having won it in last year’s edition in Qatar against Pachuca of Mexico.
