FIFA has handed a lengthy suspension to Qatari national team midfielder Assim Madibo following a reckless tackle that resulted in a broken leg for Canada’s Ismaël Koné during the 2026 World Cup.
Madibo received a straight red card for the incident, which occurred during Qatar’s heavy 6-0 defeat against Canada in the second round of the World Cup group stage.
The FIFA Disciplinary Committee officially ruled to suspend Madibo for 5 matches due to violent conduct. However, the governing body noted that the decision remains subject to appeal before the FIFA Appeal Committee.
Hospital Visit and Apology
Following the match, Madibo, accompanied by the Qatari Minister of Sports, visited Koné at the hospital where the Canadian player had undergone successful surgery. Koné graciously accepted Madibo’s apology for the challenge. The severe injury is expected to sideline the Canadian midfielder for at least 8 months.
Impact on Qatar’s AFC Asian Cup 2027 Campaign
As a result of this 5-match ban—having already served one match in the final group stage fixture—Madibo is now set to miss Qatar’s first four matches at the 2027 AFC Asian Cup, scheduled to take place this coming January in Saudi Arabia.
