US President Donald Trump chose the greatest football player in history during his attendance at the Chelsea vs. Paris Saint-Germain match in the 2025 Club World Cup final.
Trump believes Brazilian legend Pelé is the greatest player in football history, having seen him firsthand during his time with the New York Cosmos between 1975 and 1977.
When asked about the greatest player in football history, Trump said, “Pele. I saw him play when I was a kid, and he played in this stadium. It was packed. Pelé was great and fantastic.”
He added, “That was a long time ago… I came to see Pelé, and he was fantastic.”
Pele’s time in America was extremely successful, as he played 65 games with the Cosmos, scoring 37 goals and providing 18 assists. He enjoyed immense popularity in the early days of American football.
Chelsea beat Paris Saint-Germain 3-0 to win the World Cup, and the US President was keen to present the trophy to the English club and celebrate the title with Reece James’ teammates.
