João Cancelo has emerged as one of Alejandro Balde’s strongest supporters within Barcelona, with the Spanish full-back now open to leaving in search of more playing time.
According to Mundo Deportivo, the Portugal international has backed his teammate in discussions with Hansi Flick, despite their competition for a starting place.
Cancelo Stands Up for Balde
Cancelo has been offering Balde advice and encouragement, even defending him to the German coach. The Spaniard had initially greeted his arrival with reservations, particularly as both players share the same agent, Jorge Mendes.
Balde has slipped behind Cancelo and Xavi Espart in Flick’s pecking order. Even recent absences have failed to earn him a starting spot, with his involvement limited to minutes against Paris Saint-Germain, Real Madrid and Alavés.
The coaching staff believe he has struggled with lapses in concentration and poorly timed pressing, while Balde had been hoping for a direct conversation about his future.
Balde Opens the Door to England
Recent developments have prompted Balde to consider offers in January. He is attracted to the prospect of playing in England, with Manchester United emerging as a potential destination.
Barcelona, however, would prefer to receive a transfer fee to help strengthen their defence, making a permanent sale more appealing to the club than a loan.
Balde is under contract until June 2028, having signed an extension with the club whose academy he joined before progressing through the youth ranks to the first team.
With Cancelo offering support and Flick demanding more convincing performances, Balde’s future could hinge on whether his standing in the squad improves before the winter transfer window opens.
