Bayern Munich have confirmed that captain Manuel Neuer will be sidelined after suffering an injury against Mainz. The German goalkeeper is expected to miss the rest of 2026.
Neuer went off before half-time in Bayern’s 2–1 win after feeling pain in his right foot while attempting to clear a cross. Jonas Urbig replaced him.
Bayern said scans revealed a partial tear in a tendon in Neuer’s right foot. The club has given no return date, but he is expected to be out for at least six weeks.
Neuer recently missed games against Freiburg, Magdeburg and Borussia Dortmund with a tendon problem in the same foot. He returned against Atlético Madrid, keeping a clean sheet in Bayern’s 2–0 Champions League win.
Before going off injured against Mainz, Neuer became the oldest player to appear for Bayern in the Bundesliga. At 40 years and 225 days, he surpassed former goalkeeper Bernd Dreher.
Urbig is expected to start in goal after the international break, beginning with the game against Cologne on 20 November. Neuer is likely to miss eight matches, including Champions League fixtures against Lille and Slavia Prague and a German Cup tie against Hertha Berlin.
Neuer is in his 16th season with Bayern, having joined from Schalke in 2011 and won the Champions League twice with the club. His contract expires on 30 June 2027, and he is widely expected to retire at the end of the season after hinting in the summer that this could be his final campaign.
