FC Barcelona’s summer transfer plans have suffered a major setback as Brazilian forward João Pedro has officially signed a new long-term contract with Chelsea, committing his future to the Premier League club.
Barcelona originally targeted Atlético Madrid’s Julián Alvarez as their primary choice to lead the attack. However, with Atlético firmly refusing to part ways with the Argentine, Barca pivoted to João Pedro as their top alternative.
The Catalan club closely monitored João Pedro’s impressive development last season and inquired about his availability. Barcelona’s sporting management was attracted by his tactical versatility to play as a center-forward, second striker, or winger. Despite the interest, Chelsea maintained a firm stance and refused to engage in transfer negotiations.
João Pedro has now put pen to paper on a new extension with Chelsea valid until June 2032, with all official documents signed.
The renewed contract includes a pay raise and an option to extend beyond 2032, rewarding the Brazilian after he was named Chelsea’s Player of the Season for 2025–2026.
João Pedro arrived at Stamford Bridge from Brighton in July 2025 for £55 million plus £5 million in performance-based add-ons, making an immediate impact during Chelsea’s FIFA Club World Cup campaign.
During the 2025–2026 season, the Brazilian international recorded 20 goals in 49 appearances across all competitions for Chelsea, including 15 Premier League goals and 3 FIFA Club World Cup goals—one of which came in the final victory against Paris Saint-Germain.
With Julián Alvarez unavailable and João Pedro locked down in London, FC Barcelona face three options before the transfer window closes: pursue an alternative attacking target, rely on their current squad depth, or postpone a major striker signing until a future transfer window.
