Barcelona leaves Real Madrid alone and withdraws from the European Super League

Barcelona’s management has decided to completely end the Catalan club’s association with the European Super League competition, as part of its policy to mend its relationship with UEFA.

Four years ago, major European clubs announced the creation of the European Super League, which was followed by significant political upheaval and relentless pressure, ultimately leading to the withdrawal of everyone except Real Madrid and Barcelona.

Radio Catalunya reported that Barcelona’s management currently sees no justification for continuing the European Super League project following the recent amendments approved by UEFA to the Champions League and the increased profits for participating clubs.

For Joan Laporta and his entourage, the new Champions League format offers sporting and financial fairness. The relationship between Barcelona’s management and UEFA has also improved significantly in recent times, and the Catalan club does not want anything to disrupt this in the near future.

With Barcelona’s withdrawal from the European Super League, Real Madrid is left alone and without support. President Florentino Pérez’s dreams of making this competition a reality are fading, especially since the rest of Europe’s major clubs support UEFA and do not intend to participate in any tournament parallel to the Champions League.

Barcelona’s position on this issue may also be viewed as a natural reaction to the breakdown in relations with Real Madrid over the past year due to Pérez’s stance in the bribery case involving the former vice president of the refereeing committee, Negreira. Thus, the alliance between the two giants of Spanish football has completely ended.
