The Australia national team has officially announced that they will be without the services of two key players for next Friday’s crucial 2026 World Cup Round of 32 match against Egypt.
Italiano and Leckie Ruled Out for the Remainder of the World Cup
According to an official statement, Jacob Italiano sustained a thigh injury during team training, which forced him to miss the previous match against Paraguay. The latest medical update confirms that the defender’s World Cup campaign has prematurely come to an end.
The second major casualty is veteran forward Mathew Leckie, who picked up a hamstring injury during the match against the United States. Medical staff confirmed that all recovery efforts have failed, ruling him out of the Egypt clash and any potential upcoming tournament fixtures should the Socceroos advance.
Experience vs. Youth: How the Absences Impact the Socceroos
The 24-year-old Italiano, who operates as a right-back, featured in Australia’s opening two games without registering a goal or an assist. The defender has only earned 7 international caps since making his senior debut last year.
In contrast, the 35-year-old Leckie brings immense experience to the squad, being one of the proud members of the historic 2015 AFC Asian Cup-winning generation. While Leckie hasn’t found the net in this current edition, he famously scored Australia’s winning goal against Denmark in the 2022 World Cup group stage.
Squad Note: Australia is not alone in its injury woes. Egypt is also racing against time to assess their superstar Mohamed Salah, alongside center-backs Hamdi Fathi and Mohamed Abdelmonem, while midfielder Mohanad Lasheen is officially suspended for the match.
