David Silva has decided to return to professional football in a surprise move, after the Spanish star signed with Supreme Sha Tin, a newly promoted club in the Hong Kong Premier League.
The deal comes as a short-term contract within the ambitious project of the Asian club, which recently appointed Englishman Tom Ballantyne as its new manager. The club now awaits Silva’s arrival to join training and rebuild his fitness ahead of a potential debut next week.
“El Mago” (The Magician) returns to the pitch at the age of 40, more than three years after retiring in July 2023 while playing for Real Sociedad. Silva was forced to hang up his boots at 37 following an anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injury suffered during pre-season, despite having extended his contract through the summer of 2024.
Silva began his career at Valencia’s youth academy, enjoying loan spells at Eibar and Celta Vigo before establishing himself in Valencia’s first team and leading them to Copa del Rey glory in 2008. He then moved to Manchester City in the summer of 2010 after winning the World Cup with Spain.
The Spanish international went on to become one of the greatest players in Manchester City’s history over a decade-long spell, making 436 appearances, scoring 77 goals, and providing over 120 assists. He led the team to four Premier League titles, two FA Cups, five League Cups, and three Community Shields.
Silva’s impact extended far beyond trophies, providing 93 assists across 309 Premier League matches as the creative brain of the team under Roberto Mancini, Manuel Pellegrini, and Pep Guardiola. Manchester City later immortalized his legacy with a statue outside the Etihad Stadium.
The midfielder returned to La Liga with Real Sociedad in 2020, making 93 appearances, scoring 7 goals, and helping the club lift the Copa del Rey. Internationally, he earned 125 caps for Spain, scoring 35 goals while winning the 2010 World Cup and back-to-back European Championships in 2008 and 2012.
Silva originally concluded his initial career with 744 matches, 121 goals, 194 assists, and 19 major trophies for club and country. However, the offer from Hong Kong has presented an unexpected opportunity to write a final chapter in the journey of one of his generation’s finest playmakers.
