A “strange” choice to succeed Spalletti as Italy coach

The Italian Football Federation has chosen a new national team coach, but it’s a somewhat shocking choice!

Sky Italia revealed that Gennaro Gattuso is currently the favorite to succeed Luciano Spalletti as coach of the Azzurri.

The past few hours have witnessed very positive discussions between Gattuso and national team manager Gianluigi Buffon, which resulted in his selection as Italy coach.

Gattuso’s choice undoubtedly seems somewhat strange, given his modest coaching career, which has not witnessed significant successes that would qualify him for such a prestigious position.

Gattuso was fired last week from coaching Croatian club Hajduk Split, which he had coached for the entirety of last season, due to failure to win any titles.

In general, Gattuso has worked with several major clubs, such as Marseille, Valencia, Napoli, and Milan, but has only won one title: the Coppa Italia with the southern club.

If the 47-year-old is finally confirmed as Italy’s national team coach, his contract will only extend until the end of the 2026 World Cup.
