Ronaldo’s difficulties began prior to kickoff, when a section of Al-Ain supporters chanted the name of Lionel Messi during pre-match warm-ups. The Al-Nassr captain turned toward the stands and advanced in their direction before responding with applause.
Sadio Mané also intervened, appearing agitated while addressing the supporters to demand an end to the chants directed at his teammate, though the incident did not escalate into a direct confrontation.
The incident highlights the ongoing sensitivity surrounding the use of Messi’s name to provoke Ronaldo. The Portuguese star previously received a one-match suspension in Saudi Arabia following a controversial gesture in response to similar chants during a match against Al-Shabab in 2024, whereas he restricted his reaction to subtle gestures on this occasion.
The four-goal defeat amplified the severity of the evening for Ronaldo, particularly as Hazza Bin Zayed Stadium previously hosted the first leg of Al-Nassr’s quarter-final exit to Al-Ain in the 2024 edition, before the Emirati club sealed qualification on penalties following a 4-4 aggregate tie.
