Arsenal maintained their flawless start to the Premier League season after securing a hard-fought 2-0 victory against Sunderland at the Stadium of Light on Matchday 4.
The hosts resisted Mikel Arteta’s side throughout the opening half before the match shifted dramatically after the break, sparked by David Raya’s penalty save, Bruno Guimarães’ long-range strike, and Bukayo Saka’s late penalty.
Raya Paves the Way for Guimarães’ Screamer
The referee awarded Sunderland a penalty in the 56th minute, but Raya produced a brilliant save to deny Enzo Le Fée’s effort, preventing the hosts from taking the lead and keeping the Gunners’ clean sheet intact.
Just 121 seconds after Raya’s penalty save, substitute Bruno Guimarães unleashed a powerful long-range strike that struck the underside of the crossbar before nestling into the net in the 58th minute. Sunderland’s Reinildo Mandava was later sent off in the 96th minute, allowing Saka to seal the victory from the penalty spot in the 98th minute.
Arsenal Move Top With Maximum Points
Guimarães enhanced his strong record of scoring from distance, registering his fourth Premier League goal from outside the penalty box since the start of last season—a tally surpassed only by Anton Stach, who leads with five goals over the same period.
The victory lifted Arsenal’s tally to 12 points from four consecutive wins, moving them three points clear at the top of the Premier League standings ahead of Manchester City. Arteta’s side have scored eight goals while conceding just once across fixtures against Coventry City, Aston Villa, Chelsea, and Sunderland.
Arsenal’s Schedule Prior to the International Break
Arteta’s side have two remaining fixtures before the upcoming international break, starting with an away trip to face Ipswich Town on Tuesday, September 15, in the EFL Cup.
Arsenal complete this stretch against Brighton & Hove Albion at the Amex Stadium on Saturday, September 19, in the Premier League, before resuming domestic competition against Leeds United on October 10.
