Kylian Mbappé addressed criticism regarding his off-ball performance with immense confidence, asserting that it neither intimidates him nor influences the decisions he makes in his career.
The French national team captain delivered his response during an interview with L’Équipe, amid renewed debate over his pressing rates and defensive work rate, despite his continued goal-scoring exploits for Real Madrid.
“This is the life of someone who has lived in excellence for years,” Mbappé said, explaining that people already know what he can deliver, which leads them to focus instead on the things he does not do. He added: “I have a balanced approach toward criticism; there is constructive criticism and there is illogical criticism,” emphasizing that he does not dwell on public reactions when he believes his decisions are correct or necessary.
Addressing accusations that he negatively impacts team balance despite his individual numbers, Mbappé argued that such logic is flawed. He noted that if he stops scoring, everyone asks about the lack of goals, whereas the fundamental objective of football remains scoring more than the opponent. The French star added that every player lives under the evaluation of “millions of coaches” after every match, and that everyone having an opinion does not mean it should be treated as absolute truth.
The numbers back up Mbappé’s confidence: he finished as the top scorer in La Liga during his first two seasons with Real Madrid, tallying 56 goals in 65 league appearances, while also finishing as the sole top scorer of the 2025–2026 UEFA Champions League.
He further raised the bar at the 2026 World Cup, scoring ten goals to capture the Golden Boot and reaching 22 total World Cup goals to become the tournament’s all-time leading goalscorer—extending a career that began at Monaco, saw him score 256 goals for Paris Saint-Germain, and featured victories at the 2018 World Cup and the UEFA Nations League.
