Lionel Scaloni has decided to hand Nico Paz Argentina’s iconic No. 10 jersey, making the Como starlet the designated heir to the legendary squad number previously worn by Diego Maradona and Lionel Messi.
According to The Sun, citing Argentine reports, the decision was made internally with strong backing from the coaching staff. However, its implementation remains tied to Scaloni’s continuation as manager, with contract renewal negotiations expected to begin in the coming months.
The No. 10 shirt became vacant following Messi’s international retirement on August 31, shortly after losing the 2026 FIFA World Cup final to Spain. Messi concluded his international career with 207 caps and 125 goals, having led Argentina to a World Cup title, two Copa América trophies, and the Finalissima.
Born in Tenerife in 2004, Paz is the son of former Argentina defender Pablo Paz. He began his youth career at Tenerife’s academy before joining Real Madrid at age 11 in 2016, progressing through the ranks of La Fábrica.
The left-footed playmaker made eight senior appearances for Real Madrid, scoring a memorable goal against Napoli in the UEFA Champions League, and was part of the squad that won the European crown in 2024 before moving to Italian side Como for around €6 million.
Under Cesc Fàbregas’ guidance, Paz developed into one of Serie A’s standout talents, recording 19 goals and 17 assists in 75 matches over two seasons. His tally included 12 goals and 6 assists in the league last term, helping Como secure a historic fourth-place finish and qualify for the UEFA Champions League.
His rapid rise prompted Como to purchase his full registration rights from Real Madrid for €60 million. Real Madrid retained a buy-back clause set at approximately €80 million for summer 2027 after the player chose to remain in Italy to guarantee regular playing time.
On the international stage, Paz pledged his allegiance to Argentina over Spain and has earned 11 caps to date, scoring one goal and providing one assist. His first international assist was for Messi on his debut against Bolivia, followed by a goal against Mauritania and two appearances at the 2026 World Cup while wearing the No. 18 shirt.
