Chelsea have officially announced the signing of Argentine goalkeeper Emiliano Martínez from Aston Villa to bolster manager Xabi Alonso’s squad.
The 33-year-old goalkeeper signed a three-year contract, with his transfer fee to the Blues reaching approximately £7.5 million.
Speaking after his signing, Martínez said: “I am delighted to join this club. Moving to Chelsea was an easy decision for me and my family, and I cannot wait to get started.”
He added: “I want to achieve success here. I want to win everything, and I will give 100% in every match and training session to make the club, my teammates, and the fans proud.”
Martínez enters direct competition with Robert Sánchez and Belgian talent Mike Penders for the starting spot, following Filip Jörgensen’s loan move to Strasbourg.
The Argentine shot-stopper made 256 appearances over six seasons with Aston Villa, winning the Europa League last May, while compiling 228 Premier League appearances and 66 clean sheets across his career with Arsenal and Villa.
On the international stage, Martínez has earned 67 caps for Argentina, winning the 2022 FIFA World Cup and the 2021 and 2024 Copa América titles, alongside winning the Yashin Trophy for the world’s best goalkeeper twice.
Martínez joins Chelsea’s list of summer acquisitions, which includes Morgan Rogers, Geovany Quenda, Valentín Barco, Maxence Lacroix, and Marco Palestra, alongside Jordan Henderson and Danny Welbeck.
