Chelsea are considering a move in the final hours of the transfer market to sign Emiliano Martinez, after the Aston Villa goalkeeper made an offer to the London club following the arrival of Zion Suzuki at Villa Park.
Chelsea confirmed at the start of the summer that they were satisfied with their current options, but reassessed their position after the goalkeeping problem persisted. Robert Sanchez was heavily criticised for two mistakes against Fulham, while Filip Jorgensen failed to prove he could permanently reserve the starting position to be loaned out to Aston Villa.
Aston Villa have set around €10 million to agree to the sale of Martinez, a value they had asked for during their previous negotiations with Juventus. However, the Italian club decided to withdraw from the deal and opted to sign Guglielmo Vicario instead.
The deal gives Chelsea the chance to acquire a goalkeeper with considerable experience and leadership personality for a limited amount, but the club has not yet made a final decision and the deal is still in its early stages, according to The Athletic.
Martinez wants to leave Aston Villa and take on a new challenge, which coach Unai Emery has confirmed, while the club has signed Suzuki to become their first goalkeeper. This comes despite the 33-year-old Argentine goalkeeper’s contract extending until the summer of 2029.
Martinez also changed his agent after failing to secure his transfer to a new club during the last two seasons, as his attempt to join Manchester United in the summer of 2025 was disrupted, before his negotiations with Juventus collapsed during the current market, and the new management of his business began offering his services to several clubs.
