Juventus have decided to pull out of a potential move for Aston Villa and Argentina goalkeeper Emiliano Martínez due to concerns over an ongoing finger injury, despite the player’s desire to join the Italian giants.
Martínez had informed Aston Villa’s hierarchy of his wish to complete a transfer to Juventus in June. Following the player’s green light, Juventus submitted an initial proposal worth £6 million up front, plus £2.5 million in performance-related add-ons.
However, Aston Villa stood firm on their £8.5 million valuation as a fixed fee. This disagreement, combined with growing medical concerns regarding the Argentine shot-stopper’s physical condition, prompted Juventus to refrain from submitting an improved offer.
Martínez is currently managing a fractured finger sustained during warm-ups prior to the UEFA Europa League final against Freiburg. Despite the severity of the injury, he chose to play through the pain to represent Argentina at the FIFA World Cup.
The World Cup winner previously disclosed that he competed for his country in substantial pain, acknowledging that medical specialists strongly recommended surgery—an option he repeatedly deferred to avoid a lengthy spell on the sidelines.
“My finger still hurts every day,” Martínez explained. “I knew the pain would be severe, but I avoided surgery. Every specialist I consulted advised me that an operation was necessary, warning that I wouldn’t be able to play otherwise.”
Following the collapse of the Martínez negotiations, Juventus swiftly turned their attention to Tottenham Hotspur goalkeeper Guglielmo Vicario. The Premier League side has accepted a proposal for an initial loan deal for the Italian goalkeeper, which includes a non-mandatory purchase option.
Vicario is keen on making the switch to Turin and is expected to leave Tottenham today to complete the necessary formalities. The transfer provides Juventus with an immediate solution between the posts, while retaining the flexibility to make the move permanent at the end of the season.
