Manuel Neuer’s legendary career is approaching its final chapter, as the Bayern Munich captain hinted at the possibility of retiring from football in the summer of 2027, coinciding with the end of his current contract with the Bavarian giants.
Although the German goalkeeper has refused to make a final decision just yet, his recent statements have fueled speculation that the 2026-2027 season could be his last on the green pitch.
When asked about his future, Neuer said: “I will let everything come in due time, and then I will see what happens.”
The 40-year-old added: “I will enter the season with the aim of pursuing the biggest possible goals, and then we will see what happens after that.”
These remarks come weeks after a clearer hint dropped by Neuer during Bayern Munich’s training camp, when he confirmed that all signs point towards his retirement at the end of next season. However, he stressed at the same time that he will not treat the matches as a farewell tour.
Neuer renewed his contract with Bayern last May for an additional season, extending his association with the club until June 30, 2027. He confirmed at the time that his ability to maintain his level, alongside his enjoyment of working with coach Vincent Kompany and the current squad, prompted him to continue playing for another year.
Bayern is preparing to kick off its official season by facing Borussia Dortmund in the German Super Cup on August 22, before opening its Bundesliga title defense campaign against Stuttgart at the Allianz Arena on the 28th of the same month.
The Bavarian team enters the new season having secured the domestic double (League and German Cup) last season, while their Champions League journey ended in the semi-finals against Paris Saint-Germain. A third continental triumph remains one of the biggest goals Neuer may seek to achieve before drawing the curtain on his career.
Neuer is embarking on his 16th season in a Bayern shirt, following his move to the club in the summer of 2011 from Schalke. He began his professional career with the Royal Blues and made his Bundesliga debut in 2006.
Since his arrival in Munich, Neuer has become one of the most important players in the club’s history. He has held the captain’s armband since 2017, surpassed the 500 official matches mark, and won the Champions League title twice and the Bundesliga 13 times, along with a vast number of domestic and continental titles.
On the international stage, Neuer led the German national team for many years, with his standout moment being the 2014 World Cup triumph in Brazil. During that tournament, he cemented his status among the greatest goalkeepers in history thanks to his advanced playing style and his ability to master the “sweeper-keeper” role.
