Liverpool has officially announced an agreement with FC Barcelona to sign Uruguayan defender Ronald Araujo, marking the beginning of a new chapter in the Premier League for the player after making over 200 appearances for the Catalan club.
Araujo has already arrived in England, completing his transfer procedures at Liverpool’s training center. He has chosen to wear the number 33 shirt and is currently awaiting the issuance of his work permit and final international clearance to be officially registered.
Araujo’s Transfer Details
The 27-year-old defender joins Liverpool on a season-long loan, which includes a non-mandatory buy option set at approximately €55 million for the summer of 2027, according to Spanish reports.
Liverpool will cover Araujo’s salary in full during the loan period, though neither club has disclosed whether there is an initial loan fee. The player remains under contract with Barcelona until June 2031, providing the Catalan club with a secure margin should the buy option not be triggered.
Araujo brings extensive experience, having played 213 matches for Barcelona, scoring 14 goals. His trophy cabinet includes three La Liga titles, two Copa del Rey trophies, and three Spanish Super Cups.
Araujo’s First Words as a Red
Araujo expressed his delight at completing the move, stating: > “I can’t wait to start working, I am very happy.” He emphasized that joining a massive and historic club like Liverpool is the perfect step for his career at this moment.
He added that negotiations moved swiftly as soon as he learned of Liverpool’s interest, describing his transfer as coming “at the right place and the right time.”
The Uruguayan defender also revealed that he received a congratulatory message from his former Barcelona teammate, Luis Suárez, who told him he had joined a great club. He also spoke with his close friend and international teammate Darwin Núñez, who painted a highly positive picture of the Liverpool fans and the atmosphere inside the club.
Barcelona Targets Natan as a Replacement
In response, Barcelona has immediately started working to fill the void left by Araujo, identifying Brazilian center-back Natan from Real Betis as one of their primary targets.
According to TNT Sports Brasil, Barcelona has made contact with Betis officials to explore the possibility of signing the 25-year-old defender. However, negotiations are still in the early stages, and the Catalan club has not yet submitted an official bid.
Natan’s market value is estimated at around €25 million, following his permanent move to Betis from Napoli for roughly €8 million. Although the Andalusian club had previously hoped to sell him for over €30 million, a lack of massive offers might force them to lower their demands, while Barcelona is still merely exploring the feasibility of the deal.
The Brazilian defender featured in 45 official matches last season. He is known for being left-footed and possesses an excellent ability to build up play from the back—qualities that make him a prime candidate to replace Araujo.
