The Algerian Football Federation (FAF) has initiated its search for a new head coach following the departure of Swiss manager Vladimir Petković, with former Liverpool and Real Madrid boss Rafa Benítez emerging as the leading candidate.
The Algerian football authority is considering both domestic and foreign options, with Benítez positioned ahead of the September international window.
Petković Departs Despite Contract Extension
The FAF announced the mutual termination of Petković’s contract and that of his coaching staff, despite having extended his tenure through July 2028 ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
The decision follows Algeria’s exit in the Round of 32 at the 2026 World Cup following a 2-0 defeat to Switzerland. The Desert Warriors opened their campaign with a 3-0 loss to Argentina, a 2-1 victory over Jordan, and a 3-3 draw against Austria, advancing to the knockout phase as one of the best third-placed teams.
Petković oversaw a period of relative recovery, securing World Cup qualification after Algeria missed the 2018 and 2022 editions, alongside reaching the quarter-finals of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON). Over his first 28 matches, he compiled 21 wins, 4 draws, and 3 losses, lifting Algeria to 28th in the FIFA World Rankings. Reports indicate Petković received a severance package equivalent to two months’ salary.
Benítez Targeted to Lead New Project
Media reports indicate that Rafa Benítez has emerged as the primary choice to succeed Petković. FAF officials have opened preliminary discussions with Benítez’s representatives to evaluate financial terms and project alignment, though no formal agreement on contract length or salary has been reached.
Benítez previously indicated an openness to international management following his departure from Panathinaikos, stating: “It is time to choose an interesting project in Europe or consider managing a national team.”
The 66-year-old manager’s most recent position was with Greek club Panathinaikos, where he served from October 2025 until May 2026, guiding the side to a fourth-place league finish, the Greek Cup semi-finals, and their strongest European run in 16 years.
