Manuel Neuer has confirmed that his international career with the Germany national football team has come to an end following Die Mannschaft’s disappointing elimination from the 2026 FIFA World Cup against Paraguay in the Round of 32.
The 41-year-old goalkeeper had previously announced his international retirement after Euro 2024. However, manager Julian Nagelsmann successfully convinced him to reverse his decision for the 2026 World Cup following a dip in form from counterparts Oliver Baumann and Alexander Nübel.
Despite his highly anticipated return, Neuer’s impact was far less influential than expected, as he failed to keep a single clean sheet, conceding at least one goal in every match during this tournament.
Speaking after the dramatic penalty shootout defeat to Paraguay, Neuer said:
“Yes, this was my final match for Germany. It is a true shame that my international career has to end this way.”
Manuel Neuer’s Unwanted World Cup Record
Statistically, the iconic shot-stopper has struggled significantly throughout his last three World Cup appearances. Neuer set an unwanted, disastrous record by failing to keep a clean sheet in 10 consecutive World Cup matches, conceding at least once in each game.
Who Will Replace Manuel Neuer for Germany?
Germany is now left without a clear first-choice goalkeeper to succeed Neuer. With inconsistent performances from Baumann and Nübel, and the emergence of young Bayern Munich prospect Jonas Urbig, the goalkeeper position looks set to cause a major selection headache for Germany’s coaching staff in the coming years.
On a club level, Neuer recently renewed his contract with Bayern Munich for another year, extending his stay until the summer of 2027. It is widely expected that he will officially retire from all football then, bringing down the curtain on a truly legendary career.
