The French Football Federation (FFF) announced on Tuesday that Les Bleus head coach Didier Deschamps will not be on the touchline for France’s final World Cup group stage match against Norway on Friday, following the death of his mother.
The FFF stated that Deschamps learned of his mother’s passing on Tuesday morning and is currently returning to France to attend her funeral.
“At this incredibly painful time, we wish the head coach great strength and assure him of everyone’s support,” the FFF statement read.
The federation added that assistant coach Guy Stéphan will take temporary charge of the squad—including Friday’s upcoming fixture in Massachusetts, USA—until Deschamps returns. However, the FFF did not specify an exact date for his return to the United States.
End of an Era for Les Bleus
The 57-year-old tactician had previously announced his decision to step down as France manager at the end of the 2026 World Cup, concluding a legendary 14-year tenure in charge of the national team.
The former France captain famously guided Les Bleus to World Cup glory in 2018, before finishing as runners-up to Argentina in a dramatic penalty shootout at the 2022 finals. In the current tournament, France kicked off their campaign with two consecutive wins, defeating Senegal 3-1 and Iraq 3-0, successfully securing their spot in the knockout stages.
