Germany defender Nico Schlotterbeck will miss the remainder of the FIFA World Cup 2026 after suffering a severe knee injury during Germany’s match against Ivory Coast on Saturday.
The Borussia Dortmund center-back played through the first half using painkillers after receiving on-pitch medical treatment. However, he was unable to continue and was replaced by Antonio Rüdiger for the second half.
Nagelsmann and Bild Confirm the Severity
Germany head coach Julian Nagelsmann indicated that Schlotterbeck suffered a knee ligament injury, stating that the situation “does not look good.” According to German newspaper Bild, further medical examinations are scheduled for Sunday, but it is now highly unlikely that he will feature again in the tournament across the USA, Canada, and Mexico.
A Major Defensive Blow for Die Mannschaft
This injury deals a massive blow to Germany’s World Cup aspirations. Nagelsmann is now left with only two primary center-backs:
-
Antonio Rüdiger
-
Jonathan Tah
In case of an emergency, the German manager will now have to rely on Waldemar Anton to fill the void.
Impact on Real Madrid Transfer Rumors
Schlotterbeck has established himself as one of the world’s top defenders recently, heavily linking him with a summer transfer to Real Madrid. However, this long-term injury setback could significantly damage his chances of securing a move to the Spanish giants.
