The 33-year-old Real Madrid shot-stopper had previously been away from the national team for nearly a year and a half due to a public fallout with former manager Domenico Tedesco. He officially made his return to the Red Devils following the appointment of French manager Rudi Garcia.

Courtois’ Statements Before the Egypt Clash

Speaking at a press conference ahead of Belgium’s World Cup opening match against Egypt in the USA, Canada, and Mexico edition, Courtois spoke candidly about his future:

“I am thinking about passing on the torch; we have many rising talents coming through.”

The Los Blancos goalkeeper added: “I don’t know if it’s appropriate to talk about the future right now, but the probability of me not continuing after this tournament seems higher than me staying. I still want to play for several more years, but in the end, you have to take care of your body. My family is here with me because this might be my last major tournament.”

Leaving the Door Ajar: Conditions for a U-Turn

Despite his strong hints, the Real Madrid star did not completely close the door on his international career, stating: “If we achieve good results in this World Cup and the positive atmosphere within the squad continues, things might change.”

He continued: “I will need to discuss this with the manager Rudi Garcia, the technical director of the Belgian FA Vincent Mannaert, and of course, the medical staff.”

Injury Struggles Fueling Retirement Thoughts

Courtois concluded by highlighting the physical toll that has influenced his thinking: “Over the past year and a half, I have suffered from some minor physical issues and injuries. It is only natural that this makes you think more seriously about your future.”
