Real Madrid legend Pepe has emerged as a top candidate to join Jose Mourinho’s coaching staff at Los Blancos, according to reports from Radio Marca.
The official announcement appointing the “Special One” as Real Madrid’s new manager is expected within a few hours. The royal club will reportedly pay €15 million to terminate Mourinho’s contract with his previous club, Benfica.
Blending Legend Status with Defensive Expertise
Mourinho is planning to bring one of the Merengues’ historic stars into his backroom staff to ensure better communication and connection with the current squad. He has initially set his sights on Pepe.
The 43-year-old Portuguese icon retired from professional football two years ago and still commands immense respect among Real Madrid officials and players alike. This makes him an ideal fit for the assistant role under Mourinho.
Pepe’s projected role will focus on improving the defensive organization, instilling a winning mentality, and strengthening the bonds inside the locker room. He is envisioned to act as a crucial bridge between the players and Mourinho.
A Strong Bond Dating Back to 2010
So far, club president Florentino Perez has not made a final decision on whether to push for this appointment or simply rely on Mourinho’s usual coaching staff.
The Portuguese manager shares a deeply rooted relationship with Pepe, dating back to their successful time together between 2010 and 2013 during Mourinho’s first tenure at the Santiago Bernabeu.
