In a surprise move, the Algerian Football Federation (FAF) has extended the contract of head coach Vladimir Petković, just days before the kick-off of the FIFA World Cup 2026.
While football federations typically delay decision-making on managers’ futures until after the tournament, Algeria has broken the norm. The FAF deemed it essential to retain the Swiss tactician, regardless of the upcoming World Cup results.
According to an official FAF statement, Petković has signed a two-year extension with the “Desert Warriors,” securing his position until the end of July 2028.
“The Algerian Football Federation highly values this continuity at the helm of the national team’s technical staff. It embodies stability and trust in the work accomplished so far, serving as an extra incentive to pursue our set goals in upcoming competitions,” the statement read.
Petković’s Impressive Record with Algeria
Since taking charge of the Algerian national team on February 29, 2024, Petković has managed an impressive run:
-
Matches: 28
-
Wins: 21
-
Draws: 4
-
Defeats: 3
-
Goals Scored: 67
-
Goals Conceded: 22
One of Petković’s standout achievements was guiding Algeria to the quarter-finals of the recent Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), recovering from consecutive group-stage exits in the 2021 and 2023 editions.
World Cup 2026 Challenge Awaits
Now, the pressure is on the Swiss manager to justify this immense faith on the world stage. Algeria kicks off its World Cup 2026 campaign against Argentina on June 16, followed by Group Stage fixtures against Jordan and Austria.
