Portugal kicked off their final preparations for the World Cup 2026 with a 2-1 friendly victory over Chile at the Estádio Nacional in Lisbon.
Football icon Cristiano Ronaldo started the match and played the entire first half, which ended in a goalless draw but was heavily marred by disciplinary drama. A fierce altercation broke out between Portuguese forward Rafael Leão and Chilean defender Iván Román. Following a display of violent conduct from both sides, the referee promptly showed straight red cards to both players, forcing each team to play the remainder of the match with 10 men.
Bruno Fernandes and Guedes Secure Victory Before Nigeria Friendly
At the start of the second half, Gonçalo Guedes was subbed on to replace Ronaldo and immediately made an impact, netting the opening goal for Roberto Martínez’s side in the 58th minute.
Manchester United maestro Bruno Fernandes doubled the lead for the hosts with a powerful signature strike from outside the penalty box. Chile managed to score a consolation goal deep into stoppage time through Lucas Cepeda in the 92nd minute.
Portugal will play one final warm-up friendly against Nigeria on June 10th before flying out to the World Cup in North America. The Seleção will launch their World Cup campaign against the DR Congo on June 17th, followed by Uzbekistan on June 23rd, and a highly anticipated final group-stage clash against Colombia on June 28th.
