The Saudi Pro League side Al-Ittihad has officially entered the race to sign Liverpool defender Ibrahima Konaté, in what is becoming one of the most anticipated free transfer sagas of the summer. The French international’s departure from Anfield has been confirmed after both parties failed to reach an agreement on a contract extension. This development allows the 27-year-old powerhouse to join any club as a free agent, sparking intense competition among Europe’s elite.
According to reports from Foot Mercato, Al-Ittihad is the latest heavyweight to join the pursuit. The Jeddah-based club is looking to initiate a massive squad overhaul this summer to reclaim its status and compete with Riyadh giants Al-Hilal and Al-Nassr. Strengthening the defense with a world-class center-back like Konaté is seen as a top priority for the club’s ambitious board.
However, the path to signing the Frenchman is far from easy. Al-Ittihad faces stiff competition from the pinnacle of European football. Real Madrid is reportedly the most determined to secure his services, viewing him as a vital addition to their backline. Additionally, Bayern Munich and Paris Saint-Germain are also monitoring the situation closely, hoping to convince the defender to remain in the UEFA Champions League circuit.
For Konaté, the decision remains open. While the allure of European glory is strong, Al-Ittihad’s financial package—a massive salary that no European club can realistically match—makes the Saudi option highly tempting. Since joining Liverpool from RB Leipzig in 2021 for €40 million, Konaté has made 183 appearances, winning the Premier League and reaching a Champions League final. His experience at the highest level makes him the ultimate prize for any club this summer.
