In a shocking decision that has rocked English football, Southampton FC has been expelled from the Championship Play-offs after admitting to spying on three rival clubs during the season.
The EFL (English Football League) charged the “Saints” with observing training sessions of Oxford United and Ipswich Town, in addition to filming Middlesbrough as they prepared for the play-off semi-final first leg on May 7.
Key Sanctions Imposed:
-
Immediate Expulsion: Southampton will miss the play-off final at Wembley, often called the “richest game in football,” with at least £110 million in broadcast revenue at stake.
-
Points Deduction: An independent disciplinary commission has handed the club a 4-point deduction for the next Championship season.
-
Middlesbrough Reinstated: After losing to Southampton in the semi-finals, Middlesbrough will now take their place to face Hull City in the final for a spot in the Premier League.
