Barcelona has reached a preliminary agreement with head coach Hansi Flick to secure his future at the club for at least two more seasons. This move is seen as a reward from Joan Laporta’s administration for the German’s exceptional performance, having effectively guided the Blaugrana to their second consecutive La Liga title.
Flick Opts for a Short-Term Commitment
According to Mundo Deportivo, Hansi Flick has given his “green light” to Barcelona for a contract extension. While his current deal was set to expire in the summer of 2026, the new agreement adds an additional year.
The Catalan club’s hierarchy initially proposed a long-term extension until 2029. However, maintaining his preference for shorter commitments, Flick informed President Laporta directly that a one-year extension is the best approach for all parties.
The deal includes a mutual option to extend for another year at the end of the 2027-28 season, provided both sides agree. The new contract also features a significant salary increase, reflecting the club’s appreciation for how Flick restored Barcelona to the elite of European football following the challenging period after Lionel Messi’s departure in 2021.
When Will the Official Announcement Happen?
Only minor details remain before the final paperwork is signed, with an official announcement expected within a week.
Flick’s agent, Pini Zahavi, is scheduled to arrive in Barcelona this week for a high-level meeting. Beyond finalizing Flick’s extension, the meeting will address the future of another high-profile client, Robert Lewandowski.
Barcelona hopes to announce the news alongside their official La Liga title celebrations. This could happen as early as the upcoming match against Osasuna (depending on Real Madrid’s result against Espanyol) or following the El Clásico on May 10th.
The Flick Era: 5 Trophies in Two Seasons
Hansi Flick took over a Barcelona side coming off a trophyless season under Xavi Hernández. Since July 2024, the German tactician has led the club to five domestic trophies:
- Season One: A historic domestic treble (La Liga, Copa del Rey, and Supercopa de España).
- Season Two: The Supercopa de España title, with a second consecutive La Liga title just days away from being secured.
On the European stage, Flick brought Barcelona back to the Champions League semi-finals last season for the first time in years (losing to Inter Milan). In the current campaign, the team’s European journey ended in the quarter-finals at the hands of Atlético Madrid.
