The Egyptian Football Association is working on a significant overhaul of Egyptian football, starting with reducing the number of foreign professionals allowed in each club participating in the Egyptian Premier League.
Current regulations allow clubs to register five foreign professionals, in addition to three under-21 players. The current trend is towards a substantial reduction in these numbers to give more opportunities to local players, which will consequently benefit the Egyptian national team.
Media personality Ahmed Shobeir stated that starting with the 2026-27 season, the number of under-21 foreign professionals will be reduced to two from three, then to one, and finally, this rule will be abolished, prohibiting the recruitment of foreign players in this age group.
The same will apply to senior foreign players, with their number being reduced to four, then to three, with the ultimate goal of reaching just two per team.
This decision comes specifically after the Egyptian national team was noticeably affected in several positions due to the excessive reliance on foreign players.
Discussions on this matter are expected to conclude within the next few weeks, with an official announcement anticipated next summer, prior to the start of the new season in August.
